Soroptimist International of Brea/La Habra News
June 2010
In the May newsletter, I mentioned that several members and I were off to the annual Desert Coast Region Conference. It was wonderful. The venue, speakers, presenters and the business meetings were highly organized and insightful. The highlight of the event (in my opinion) was the Friday night and Saturday lunch keynote speakers: Shirley McCoy and Hanna Jensbo. Hanna Jensbo is the current S.I. President. Hanna spoke about the various projects that S.I. has endeavored throughout the world and our involvement with the United Nations. It was exciting to learn about how many things S.I. has done to make the world a better place.
Shirley Mc Coy who has held many positions within Soroptimist of the America’s and Soroptimist International and is currently a Federation Board Member, also talked about the many projects funded by S.I. and how and where our dollars are spent. Both women expressed passion and enthusiasm that was contagious and gave a clear picture as to how Soroptimist has improved the lives of women and children in our backyards and the world. It was one of the best conferences I have attended in the twenty some years of my S.I. life.
In May, our Club had the honor of hosting Brea and La Habra high school students at our annual student award lunches. Thanks so much to Pat Fox and Els Delanoy for making the lunches so special. So many times we hear about the lack of morality and structure of high school students in society and the home, well, we have certainly proven that theory wrong! The students are generous with their time, high achievers and insightful to the complexities and woes of the world. If this is any indication of the quality of today’s students, ladies, our future is in good hands.
Because of the student awards, we did not have a business meeting. At the June meeting, we have many vital issues to discuss and decisions to make. It would be greatly appreciated, if all of you could make the meeting. It is important to have the full membership available for an open and candid discussion.
It has been an honor and pleasure to serve as your President this year and I am looking forward to another year of represent-ing this awesome Club. Thank you for your confidence
President Fran
